La Grave à Pomerol: The Aristocracy of Finesse
Located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau, Château La Grave (formerly La Grave Trigant de Boisset) is one of the gems of the Moueix gallery. Here, the gravelly soil provides a particular distinction. Unlike the sometimes heavy opulence of certain crus, La Grave stands out with a silky texture and aromatic elegance that make it one of the most digestible and refined wines of the appellation.
1990: A Legendary Vintage
The year 1990 has entered the pantheon of Bordeaux vintages. A sunny year that allowed for perfect grape ripeness, offering rich, deep wines that nonetheless retained incredible freshness. In this bottle, the power of the vintage meets the finesse of La Grave's terroir for a result of absolute harmony.
Exceptional State of Preservation
This bottle is in remarkable presentation for its age. The label is clean and perfectly legible, the capsule is intact, and the fill level indicates ideal cellar storage. It is a choice piece for a collector or an enthusiast wishing to celebrate an event related to the year 1990.
Tasting Notes
We had the privilege of tasting this cru recently. The color is a deep garnet, slightly brick-red at the edges. The nose is a festival: black truffle, damp earth, candied cherry, and a hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, it is velvet incarnate. The tannins are melted, the texture is fleshy yet ethereal, finishing with a saline and spicy length characteristic of great mature Pomerols.
Food Pairings
- Tournedos Rossini (foie gras and truffle)
- Roasted pigeon with French-style peas
- Risotto with porcini mushrooms and aged Parmesan
- An aged Gouda or a well-ripened Brie de Meaux
Serving Suggestions
- Temperature: 17°C (63°F)
- Aeration: Decant 1 hour before serving. Pouring into a decanter is not necessary but can help release the last tertiary aromas if done gently.
- Cellaring: At its peak. Can still maintain this level of pleasure for 5 to 8 years.
WUAT Rating
Château La Grave 1990 is what we call a "connoisseur's wine." It does not seek to impress with brute force, but with its masterful balance. A superb classic Pomerol that proves 1990 remains one of the greatest vintages of the last century. At this price, it is a rare opportunity to experience the genius of the Moueix family.
