About the Estate: Poderi Aldo Conterno
The Poderi Aldo Conterno estate, located on the famous Bussia hill in Monforte d'Alba, is considered one of the world's greatest wine estates. Founded in 1969 by Aldo Conterno, affectionately known as "The King of Barolo," the estate is now run by his three sons (Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo). Combining a deep respect for Piedmontese traditions (long macerations and aging in large traditional oak casks) with absolute technical rigor in the vineyard, Aldo Conterno crafts Nebbiolos of legendary character, power, and aristocratic finesse.
About the Appellation: Barolo Riserva and the Mythical Terroir of Bussia
The Barolo DOCG appellation represents the elite of Italian Piedmont. The "Riserva" designation requires an exceptional extended aging of a minimum of 5 years before release. The Granbussia cuvée is the absolute pinnacle of the estate: it results from an ultra-rigorous blend of the oldest vines from three legendary plots located in the heart of the Bussia cru: Romirasco (70%), Cicala (15%), and Colonnello (15%). The soil, composed of clay-calcareous marls from the Helvetian era, gives the wine a monumental structure and unparalleled complexity.
2000: Vintage of the Century in Italy
The 2000 vintage is celebrated throughout Piedmont as a historic year of extraordinary opulence and richness. A hot, dry, and perfectly consistent summer allowed for Nebbiolo grapes of extraordinary phenolic maturity, endowed with rare silky tannins while retaining the essential acidic structure for very long aging. The 2000 Barolos are distinguished by their fleshy, generous character and their immense tertiary aromatic complexity, which has now reached its peak.
Description of the Bottle's Condition
The two bottles available in this prestigious lot are in perfect general condition. The fill levels are impeccable, stable at the highest original level. The original labels of this mythical Granbussia cuvée are perfectly crisp and clean, without any tears or traces of moisture. The heavy pewter capsules are intact and hermetic. Ideal and uninterrupted storage in a private climate-controlled cellar.
Food & Wine Pairings and Serving Suggestions
Serving suggestions: Ideally serve at 16°C - 17°C in very large wine glasses. A slow and gentle decanting of 45 minutes to 1 hour is highly recommended to release the monumental complexity of this 26-year-old Nebbiolo.
Gastronomic pairings: This Italian monument calls for dishes rich in flavors and nobility: a Piedmontese white truffle risotto, a wild boar stew braised in Barolo, a Rossini beef fillet, or roasted game meats.
Personal Note and Uniqueness of the Cuvée
"Aldo Conterno's Granbussia Riserva cuvée is a rare and mythical liquid work of art, crafted only in exceptional vintages. This 2000 vintage is a thoroughbred at its absolute peak. The nose is a total enchantment, of dizzying complexity: notes of noble tar (the famous Piedmontese 'tar'), candied blood orange peel, Havana tobacco leaves, old leather, black licorice, and truffled undergrowth. On the palate, the Helvetian power of Monforte is there, masterful, but completely tamed by velvety tannins and incredible mentholated freshness. An interminable finish that leaves you speechless. A bottle of major speculative rarity."
