Caroni is a Trinidadian distillery renowned for its inimitable style of "Heavy Rum." Founded in 1923, the distillery closed its doors in 2003 (by government decree). This rum comes from the 2000 vintage, making it one of the last casks produced before the distillery ceased operations, thus giving it historical value and great rarity.

The Bottler: Velier and the "Extra Strong" Series

This bottling was carried out by the Italian company Velier, under the direction of Luca Gargano, who played a key role in discovering and marketing Caroni's remaining stocks. The "Extra Strong 100% Proof" designation means it is bottled at 50% ABV. The bottle features a label design inspired by the 1940 originals, commemorating the golden age of Trinidadian rum.

Cuvée Details: Distilled in 2000, Aged 12 Years

This rum was distilled in January 2000 and aged for twelve years under the tropical conditions of Trinidad, a climate that results in an "Angel's Share" (loss due to evaporation) of approximately 60% of the distillate. These are the last available casks of 100% Trinidad Rum produced from local molasses.

Tasting Notes: The "Heavy Trinidad Rum" Profile

This 12-year-old Caroni offers a classic profile of heavy Trinidadian rum, despite its relatively young age:

• Colour: Dark amber.
• Nose: Completely marked by the unique character of Caroni: notes of tar, petroleum, burnt rubber, complemented by molasses, candied fruit and sweet spices.
  
• Palate: Powerful but balanced at 50% vol. The "heavy" style is perfectly preserved, with rich flavors on the palate: black licorice, cold ash, dark chocolate, and evolved tropical notes.
• Finish: Long, warm and slightly smoky, typical of a heavy rum aged in a tropical environment.

This Caroni is a collector's item:

• Rarity: One of the last vintages from the distillery, which closed in 2003.
