Caroni is a Trinidadian distillery renowned for its inimitable style of "Heavy Rum." Founded in 1923, the distillery closed its doors in 2003 (by government decision). This rum comes from the 1998 vintage, making it one of the last casks produced before the distillery ceased operations, thus giving it historical value and great rarity.

The Bottler: Velier and the "Extra Strong" Series

This bottling was carried out by the Italian company Velier, under the direction of Luca Gargano, who played a key role in discovering and marketing Caroni's remaining stocks. The "Extra Strong 104% Proof" designation means it is bottled at 52% ABV. The bottle features a label design inspired by the 1940 originals, commemorating the golden age of Trinidadian rum.

Cuvée Details: Distilled in 1998, Aged 15 Years

This rum was distilled in February 1998 and aged for fifteen years in Trinidad, until September 22, 2013. This extended aging in a warm climate resulted in an exceptional "Angel's Share" of 75% of the initial volume, attesting to the intensity of its aromatic concentration. The rum was then bottled in Scotland in November 2013.

The Caroni 15 Year Old 1998, with its extended aging and 52% ABV, offers a profound expression of the "Heavy Trinidad Rum" style:

• Colour: Amber to deep mahogany.
• Nose: Intensely aromatic, it reveals notes of tar, solvent, rubber, but also candied tropical fruits (roasted pineapple, mango), dark chocolate, licorice and spices (pepper, nutmeg).
• Palate: Powerful and smooth. The attack is warm, but perfectly integrated. Industrial flavors mingle with roasted, woody and fruity notes (dates, prunes), with a soft tannic structure.
• Finish: Very long, lingering with aromas of tar, tobacco and sweet spices.

This rum is best enjoyed neat, without ice, at room temperature. Due to its "Extra Strong" character, it is recommended to let it breathe in a tulip glass before tasting. Adding a very small amount of water can help release its more complex notes.
