Pol Roger Sec - The Rediscovered Treasure of the 80s

The Originality of "Sec": In an era dominated by "Brut," this Pol Roger Sec from the 1980s offers a glimpse into the history of Champagne. More generous in dosage than its cousin, Brut, this style of wine was a favorite of royal courts for its ability to age gracefully.

Pol Roger: The Excellence of Épernay

Pol Roger, famous for being Winston Churchill's favorite champagne, is renowned for its meticulous production and the finesse of its bubbles. This bottle, estimated to date from the late 1980s based on its design (collar and typography), testifies to the house's unwavering consistency. The "Sec" cuvée benefits from the same base of exceptional grapes as the brand's flagship cuvées.

Why does "dry" Champagne age so well?

It's an insider's secret: sugar and acidity are time's two best allies. Originally containing around 20 to 30 grams of sugar per liter, this wine used this dosage as a shield against oxidation. After more than 35 years in the cellar, the sugar has "melted" into the wine, transforming the aromas of fresh fruit into notes of honey, hazelnut, and delicate pastry.

Tasting Notes: A Gastronomic Wine

  • Color: Intense and deep gold, with magnificent copper highlights.
  • Nose: Rich and complex. It reveals notes of apricot compote, beeswax, toasted almond and a hint of frangipane.
  • Palate: Smooth and velvety. The sweetness is no longer perceived as such, but rather as a silky texture that envelops the mineral freshness typical of Pol Roger. The finish is long, with notes of milk caramel and dried fruit.

State of Conservation

This bottle has been stored in optimal conditions in Épernay. While the label shows some slight stains due to the natural humidity of the cellar (a sign of good cork preservation), the fill level is excellent and the wine is in perfect condition. The capsule is intact.

The Exclusive of a Lost Vintage

This bottle is a true rarity for collectors: the "Sec" designation has completely disappeared from the Pol Roger range, replaced solely by "Demi-Sec." Finding a bottle bearing this specific label is a testament to a time when the House offered a more subtle dosage scale. It's a "missing link" in the history of Épernay, a phantom cuvée that you won't find in any contemporary catalog.
