Château Cos d'Estournel Presentation

Recognizable by its oriental pagodas overlooking the vineyard, Château Cos d'Estournel is one of Bordeaux's most iconic estates. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in 1855, it is often called the "Premier des Seconds" (First of the Seconds). Its deep gravel terroir, located right next to Lafite Rothschild, produces wines that combine virile power with extraordinary aromatic elegance.

Cuvée and Appellation Presentation

The Saint-Estèphe appellation is renowned for its structured and full-bodied wines. Cos d'Estournel adds an extra dimension of velvety texture and exoticism. The wine, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, develops incredible finesse over time, marked by notes of sweet spices and precious wood.

1977 Vintage Presentation

The 1977 vintage required great technical rigor from the châteaux. Elite estates like Cos d'Estournel produced wines of character, endowed with a balanced acidity that favored very long aging potential. Today, it is a vintage for lovers of "historic" wines, offering a tasting experience focused on subtlety and tertiary aromas.

Bottle Condition

This bottle is in exceptional condition for its age. The capsule is impeccable. The label is very slightly stained by time, which attests to its authenticity and its natural cellar aging. The level is "low neck," which is considered excellent for a wine over 45 years old, guaranteeing optimal protection against oxidation.

Tasting Notes

The nose opens with a complex bouquet of leather, cigar box, sandalwood, and dried black fruits. On the palate, the structure is melted and aristocratic. The tannins are silky, and the finish lingers on notes of graphite and truffle. A wine of great distinction, to be enjoyed with respect.

Food and Wine Pairings

  • Rack of lamb with Garrigue herbs
  • Roasted woodcock on toast
  • Mushroom risotto with aged Parmesan
  • To be enjoyed alone, for the beauty of the historic moment

Serving Suggestions

  • Serving temperature: 17-18°C
  • Aeration: Do not decant. A gentle opening 1 hour before serving is recommended to allow the aromas to awaken gradually.
  • Aging: A collector's wine at its peak, ready to offer a unique memorial experience.

WUAT Note

Owning a 1977 Cos d'Estournel in this condition is a rare opportunity. It is the ideal bottle to mark an event related to that year or to complete a cellar of great classified growths. A Saint-Estèphe of great lineage that has stood the test of time with superb grace.
