The 2017 Vintage: Power and Concentration
2017 will go down in history as a vintage of renewal for Château de Nalys. Acquired by the Guigal family, this historic estate benefits from the full expertise of the Ampuis house.
A Mosaic Terroir
The wine draws its complexity from the blend of three legendary plots:
- La Crau (39%): The famous rolled pebbles that provide structure and strength.
- Nalys (34%): Red sandstone and sandy soils for finesse and aromatic elegance.
- Le Parc (27%): Soils that complete the harmony of the whole.
Vinification: The choice of noble tradition
Unlike industrial methods, the Guigal family here favors containers that allow the wine to breathe. After manual harvesting and drastic sorting, vinification takes place in truncated wooden vats. The particularly long vatting period (approximately 5 weeks) allows for a slow and complete extraction of polyphenols, guaranteeing the great aging potential of this 2017.
Complex and Mastered Aging
The aging of this Châteauneuf-du-Pape follows a rigorous 24-month protocol in total, with no passage in stainless steel tanks, favoring porous materials that promote minerality:
- 18 months in wood: a clever blend of barrels, demi-muids, and large casks to complexify the spicy structure.
- 6 months in concrete tanks: this final step is crucial. It allows the wine to "rest" and stabilize its structure, accentuating those chiseled notes of flint and that mineral tension that we so appreciated during tasting.
Sensory Profile: "Mineral and Spicy"
The result of this meticulous work is a ripe wine without being overcooked. The nose is complex, carried by spices and a prominent mineral backbone. On the palate, the wine is straight, almost tense, offering a long and elegant finish. It is the archetype of modern Châteauneuf-du-Pape: powerful yet digestible.
Serving Suggestions
- Temperature: 16-18°C.
- Aging Potential: Already magnificent thanks to its melted tannins, it will continue to evolve over the next 20 years.
