Presentation of Château Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose is one of the largest and most respected estates in the Saint-Julien appellation. Classified as a Second Cru in 1855, it stands out with a single-block terroir located on one of the highest points of the appellation. Its motto, "The Wine of Kings, the King of Wines," attests to its centuries-old reputation. Gruaud Larose is famous for its consistency and its ability to produce wines of great structure capable of defying decades.

Presentation of the 2009 Vintage

The 2009 vintage has entered Bordeaux legend as one of the most prosperous years. Optimal sunshine resulted in perfectly ripe grapes, with rich and silky tannins. For Gruaud Larose, 2009 represents the ideal balance between the strength of Saint-Julien and an exceptional fruit gourmandise, offering a wine that is already seductive but built for very long aging.

A Historic Bottle

This 2009 bottle is one of the last vestiges of the estate's classic packaging before the aesthetic modernization of recent vintages. It features its traditional golden capsule and its label illustrated with the crest of two lions, symbolizing the strength and nobility of this cru. It is a collector's item for loyal followers of the property.

Condition of the Bottle

The bottle is in impeccable condition. The golden capsule is intact, with no traces of impact or corrosion. The label is clean and perfectly affixed. The fill level is perfect (high shoulder), guaranteeing maximum protection against oxidation for years to come.

Tasting Notes

The color is a deep, almost opaque purple. The nose is powerful and complex, blending black fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant), licorice, cedar, and smoky notes characteristic of the Saint-Julien terroir. On the palate, the wine impresses with its density and velvety texture. The tannins are massive but of great finesse. The finish is persistent, noble, and full of freshness.

Food and Wine Pairings

  • Matured Galician beef rib
  • Confit lamb shoulder with Herbs de Provence
  • Game birds (pheasant, partridge)
  • Aged sheep cheeses or old Gouda

Serving Suggestions

  • Serving temperature: 17-18°C
  • Aeration: This 2009 will benefit from decanting for about 2 hours before tasting to release its full aromatic potential.
  • Cellaring: A wine entering its maturity plateau but which will continue to refine over the next 20 years.
