La Lagune: The consistency of a Grand Cru Classé
Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Château La Lagune has established itself over the decades as one of the most reliable estates in the Haut-Médoc. Its vineyard, planted on a fine gravel terroir, produces wines renowned for their elegance and remarkable aging potential.
The 1985 vintage: A timeless classic
The year 1985 is remembered for its ideal weather, producing wines of perfect harmony. The blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot and a significant touch of Petit Verdot, offers fascinating complexity. As we observed during our recent tastings, this wine defies time with fruit freshness still very present.
A "nugget" with authentic aesthetics
This bottle tells a story. Its label is very disintegrated and the vintage is difficult to read, indicating a long stay in a humid cellar, an ideal condition for the preservation of the cork and the wine. The essential is preserved: the level is excellent (low neck / high shoulder), guaranteeing minimal oxidation and an optimal tasting experience.
Tasting notes
The color is a deep ruby with brick reflections. The nose is an ode to maturity: leather, cigar box, cedar and graphite, mixed with notes of candied black cherry. On the palate, it's a marvel of balance. The tannins are completely melted, offering a silky texture supported by a vibrant acidity that carries the finish very far. A radiant youth for a 40-year-old wine.
Food and wine pairings
- A seven-hour leg of lamb with herbs de Provence
- Duck with cherries or a pan-fried ceps
- Aged cheeses (Saint-Nectaire, old Cantal)
- A simple moment of meditation to appreciate the complexity of a great mature Bordeaux
Serving suggestions
- Temperature: 17-18°C
- Aeration: Do not brutally decant. A slow opening (cork removed 1 hour before) is preferable to respect its fragile structure.
- Storage: Drink now to enjoy its peak, although it can still last a few years thanks to its excellent level.
WUAT's Note
Don't be fooled by its tired label. This Château La Lagune 1985 is one of the best current value for money for anyone who wants to discover the pleasure of a great fully mature Bordeaux without breaking the bank. An authentic and memorable tasting experience.
