Presentation of Château Lafont-Rochet
Château Lafont-Rochet is a Fourth Growth Classified in 1855, located in the prestigious Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux.
Everything changed at Château Lafon Rochet in 1959 when Guy Tesseron purchased the estate. The property was in dire need of renovation, having fallen into a state of disrepair. The Tesseron family, under Guy Tesseron's leadership, completely renovated Lafon Rochet from top to bottom.
You will also notice the strong similarity between this label and that of Château Pontet-Canet, which was also owned by the Tesserons at that time.
Presentation of the Saint-Estèphe Appellation
Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost appellation of the Médoc, on Bordeaux's Left Bank. Saint-Estèphe wines are renowned for their power, rich tannins, and remarkable aging potential, which gives them a unique aromatic complexity after a few years in the cellar. The clay-limestone and gravelly soil is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety, complemented by Merlot, which adds roundness and suppleness.
The 1990 Vintage: A Blessed Year for the Médoc
The 1990 vintage is universally acclaimed as one of Bordeaux's greatest, particularly for the Classified Growths of the Left Bank. Idyllic weather conditions, with a hot, dry summer, allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and completely. The 1990 wines are characterized by remarkable richness, concentration, and balance, with ripe, silky tannins, offering exceptional longevity. The 1990 Lafont-Rochet perfectly illustrates the success of this vintage.
Details on the 1990 Vintage: Grape Varieties and Tasting Notes
Château Lafont-Rochet 1990 is made from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 55%), complemented by Merlot (approximately 40%) and small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. After more than three decades, this wine has reached its peak, offering:
- Coat: Deep red, with garnet-mahogany highlights, a sign of a beautiful evolution.
- Nose: Complex and expressive, blending aromas of candied black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), cedar, tobacco, undergrowth, licorice, and spicy notes. An aromatic elegance typical of great, mature Médoc wines.
- Palate: Ample, balanced, and elegant. The tannins are smooth and polished, offering a velvety texture. The body is full, with a beautiful aromatic persistence of ripe fruit, tertiary notes, and a harmonious finish. A lovely freshness maintains the balance.
