Château L'Église-Clinet - Pomerol 1991 (Magnum)

Presentation of Château L'Église-Clinet

Château L'Église-Clinet is a legendary Pomerol estate, considered one of the very greatest wines of Bordeaux. Under the direction of Denis Durantou (until his death in 2020), the estate became a benchmark for its singular style, combining exceptional richness and concentration with great finesse. The gravel and clay terroir produces intense and profound wines, highly sought after by connoisseurs.

Presentation of the Pomerol Appellation and the Magnum Format

Pomerol is a prestigious appellation on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, famous for its Merlot-dominated red wines, though it has no official classification. The **Magnum (1.5 liters)** format is particularly sought after for fine wines intended for aging. It offers optimal aging conditions: the volume of air (or "ullage") is proportionally lower, which slows the wine's evolution and allows it to develop greater aromatic complexity and longevity compared to a standard bottle.

The 1991 Vintage in Pomerol

The 1991 vintage was a difficult one in Bordeaux, marked by a devastating spring frost. However, the great terroirs and the tireless work of the winemakers (particularly in L'Église-Clinet) allowed for the production of exceptionally well-crafted wines, often surprising in their quality and persistence. Despite the challenges, this vintage yielded wines of finesse and character, which have aged beautifully, especially in Magnum format.

Details on the 1991 Vintage: Grape Varieties and Tasting Notes

Château L'Église-Clinet 1991 is made from a blend dominated by Merlot (approximately 85%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (approximately 15%). The wine is aged in new oak barrels. After more than 30 years, this Magnum is at its peak, offering:

  • Color: Dark ruby red, evolving towards intense garnet with some tile-like reflections.
  • Nose: Complex and deep, blending aromas of jammy black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), prune, with tertiary notes of undergrowth, black truffle, leather, tobacco and sweet spices (vanilla, pepper).
  • Palate: Powerful and elegant. The tannins are perfectly integrated, offering a velvety texture. The body is full, with beautiful aromatic concentration and surprising freshness for the vintage. The finish is very long, flavorful, and persistent.

Bottle Condition

This Magnum of Château L'Église-Clinet Pomerol 1991 is in perfect condition, ideal for tasting and collecting:

  • Format: Magnum (1.5 liters).
  • Level: Perfect (in the bottleneck - BN).
  • Label: Impeccable.
  • Capsule: Intact.
  • Overall condition: Perfect condition.

Food & Wine Pairings and Tasting Tips

Serve this wine after decanting it for approximately 1 to 2 hours to allow it to open up, at a temperature of 17-18°C. The Magnum format may require longer aeration. It pairs perfectly with refined dishes.

  • Fine red meats (beef fillet, tournedos, veal chop with morels).
  • Game (roe deer, hare à la royale).
  • Truffled dishes.
  • Mature hard cheeses (Comté 24 months, aged Gouda) or washed-rind cheeses.
