Château Lynch-Bages 1988: The Quintessence and Elegance of Pauillac
The Estate: The Soul and Generosity of Pauillac
Located on the magnificent Bages plateau at the entrance to Pauillac, Château Lynch-Bages is one of the most emblematic and respected estates in the Médoc. Although classified as a Fifth Grand Cru in 1855, its reputation and the exceptional quality of its wines regularly place it on par with the greatest Second, and even First, Growths. Under the impetus of the legendary Cazes family, Lynch-Bages has established itself as a wine of character: powerful, generous, deeply structured, and endowed with an extraordinary aging potential.
The Cuvée: The Lynch-Bages Style
This mythical cuvée is the result of a blend with a strong dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a touch of Petit Verdot. The vineyard rests on deep Garonne gravel soil, which allows for perfect drainage and optimal ripeness of the Cabernets. Aged with goldsmith-like precision in French oak barrels (a large proportion of which are new), Lynch-Bages develops this unique profile, both opulent and aristocratically rigorous.
The 1988 Vintage: A Great Médoc Classic
The 1988 vintage is often hailed by connoisseurs as a year of pure aestheticism. After a warm summer, the dry autumn allowed for grapes of superb concentration. Less exuberant in its youth than 1989 or 1990, 1988 has proven over time to be a very great aging vintage, characterized by firm tannins, preserved acidity, and remarkable linearity that give the wines sovereign longevity.
Condition of the Bottle
Level: Absolutely perfect | Color: Perfect | Label: Slightly torn and stained (normal wear and tear due to age) | Overall condition: Very good state of preservation.
Tasting Profile and Pairings
- Color: A deep garnet color, adorned with magnificent brick-red and amber reflections that bear witness to a noble and perfectly controlled evolution.
- Nose: An intense, complex, and deeply Pauillacais bouquet. There are superb notes of ripe candied blackcurrant, cigar box, cedar, pencil lead (graphite), precious leather, and sweet spices, with a hint of undergrowth after aeration.
- Palate: The attack is frank and noble. The structure on the palate is remarkable: the tannins are now superbly melted, softened by the years, but the backbone remains firm and straight. A silky texture that stretches into an interminable, fresh, and flavorful finish.
- Pairings: This emotional bottle will majestically accompany a Pauillac lamb shoulder roasted with herbs, a Bordeaux rib steak cooked over vine cuttings, a duck breast with porcini mushrooms, or delicately cooked game birds.
