Château Meyney 1974 - Prieuré des Couleys: A Sublime Saint-Estèphe Relic

The Estate: Meyney's Legendary Consistency

Château Meyney is one of Saint-Estèphe's oldest and most respected properties. Ideally situated on a magnificent gravel dome that slopes towards the Gironde, its vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir, notably characterized by a vein of blue clay subsoil (similar to that of Pomerol). Managed for much of the 20th century by the renowned Cordier house, Meyney has built an international reputation for absolute consistency. It is the king of outsiders: a wine capable of defying decades and competing with Grand Cru Classés, while maintaining an exceptional price-to-pleasure ratio.

The Cuvee: The History of "Prieuré des Couleys"

This bottle proudly displays the historic mention "Prieuré des Couleys," a direct tribute to the estate's medieval origins, founded by the Feuillants monks in the 17th century. The "Couleys" land refers to the original cadastral and geological sector surrounding the old monastery, where the historical heart of Meyney's vineyard beats. This exclusive appellation, no longer found on contemporary labels, is presented here in the typical and more squat bottle format of the Cordier era, making this wine a true piece of Bordeaux heritage.

The 1974 Vintage in Saint-Estèphe

The 1974 vintage was a true winemaker's year in Bordeaux. While the climate required drastic sorting, the Saint-Estèphe terroir and Meyney's expertise allowed for the creation of an incredibly robust wine. Thanks to its solid tannic structure and preserved acidity, this 1974 has traversed the decades with superb rectitude, offering today a complex, delicate tertiary evolution and remarkable balance for a wine that has passed its 50th year.

Tasting Profile and Pairings

  • Color: A tiled and amber color, revealing tawny reflections, translucent and luminous, typical of very great venerable Bordeaux wines.
  • Nose: A nose of great finesse that opens with notes of humus, dried autumn leaves, Russian leather, bitter cocoa, spice box, and candied prune.
  • Palate: The attack is delicate and exquisitely soft. The palate reveals itself beautifully mellow, patinated by time, where the tannins have given way to a taffeta-like texture. A lacy finish, subtly earthy and spicy.
  • Pairings: A meditation wine that will ideally accompany partridge with cabbage, homemade game terrine, roast veal with girolles, or simply an aged sheep's cheese.
