Château Rayas - Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2011
The Rayas Myth: The Châteauneuf Anomaly
Château Rayas, managed by Emmanuel Reynaud, is the quintessential Southern Rhône winery, working exclusively on fine sandy soils rather than the rounded pebbles typical of the appellation. This unique characteristic gives it a distinctive style: the wine is lighter in color and more ethereal in texture than its peers, yet possesses unparalleled complexity and aromatic purity. It is made almost entirely from Grenache grapes.
The 2011 Vintage: Charm and Vivacity
The 2011 vintage, though overshadowed by 2010, is a spectacular success at Rayas. It offers generous ripeness, yet is balanced by gentle acidity and great vibrancy that prevent the wine from being heavy. Critics were impressed by the depth and vitality of the 2011, noting that it "didn't know" it wasn't going to produce an exceptional wine.
Tasting Notes: A Spice Souk
The 2011 Rayas is already in a magnificent tasting phase and is distinguished by its exotic bouquet, often compared to "the entrance to a Moroccan souk":
- Nose: Enchanting and pure aromas of **kirsch** (cherry in brandy), ripe raspberry, incense, tamarind, sweet spices and floral notes (potpourri).
- Palate: Silky and satiny attack. The body is powerful yet light, with fine, pixelated tannins. The finish is incredibly long, ethereal, and fresh, marked by the elegance of Grenache grown on sandy soils.
Critics' Reviews and Storage Potential
This wine has received rave reviews, confirming its status as a Grand Cru collector's item:
- James Suckling: 96/100 ("A style that is a complete anomaly... Soft and supple.")
- Josh Raynolds (Vinous): "An impressive mix of depth and vibrancy."
The wine is delicious now, with an hour of decanting recommended, but it has the potential to age beautifully until 2040 and beyond.
Bottle Condition: Wine Integrity Guaranteed
The wine level is excellent (in the capsule or slightly below it), and the capsule is sealed, guaranteeing the integrity of this Grand Cru for aging. As noted, the label shows slight signs of wear consistent with its long cellaring (cosmetic, not structural).
Food & Wine Pairing and Service
Serve between 15 and 17°C, ideally decanted for 1 hour. The delicate character of Rayas requires elegant dishes that do not mask its pure fruit:
- Leg of lamb Provençal style.
- Stuffed quail or roast poultry with garrigue herbs.
- Lightly spiced dishes (lamb couscous, tagine).
