Clos de la Coulée de Serrant 1980 - Nicolas Joly Savennières
This prestigious cuvée is one of the greatest white wines of the Loire Valley and one of the most famous biodynamic vintages. It is produced by iconic winemaker Nicolas Joly, a fervent advocate of biodynamic farming. Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is a unique estate with a history dating back to the 12th century, where the vines have been cultivated according to biodynamic principles for over 30 years.
The 1980 vintage is considered Nicolas Joly's first biodynamic vintage. The cuvée is produced from grapes grown on Chenin Blanc vines in an exceptional terroir.
However, this vintage is also a bit of a toss-up for the taster. Indeed, the wine can offer an exceptional tasting experience, even the greatest of one's life, or it can disappoint due to poor bottle development. The corks used at the time were clearly not the best on the market, and biodynamic wines are very fragile. You have to rely on the color of the wine (very encouraging here) before taking the plunge. It is therefore recommended to taste this vintage with an open mind and a certain dose of curiosity and audacity.
Tasting Instructions : Open at least 12 hours before tasting to fully enjoy this wine. Be careful, this is a fragile wine that does not tolerate strong temperature fluctuations. We do not ship this bottle between June and September unless expressly requested by the buyer.
Tasting Note June 2022 : Medium golden color, a wild nose of sautéed wild mushrooms and Stilton cheese followed by lighter aromas of tropical fruits and sea spray. Over 40 years old and still plenty of definition on the palate, both rich and light, with hints of hazelnut followed by a sweet citrus note on the finish. A real treat to drink.
Exceptional provenance : These bottles come from the cellar of a great Swiss wine enthusiast and collector. We acquired the complete collection containing more than 200 bottles of mainly French and Italian wines. The bottles were all preserved following their purchase en primeur or shortly after their marketing on site, in a natural cellar buried under a 16th-century convent. A humid cellar, which is why some labels are very worn. The levels are generally excellent or perfect, and the most "fragile" bottles testify to conservation in total darkness for more than 30 years!
