Clos de la Coulée de Serrant 1988 - Nicolas Joly Savennières
Presentation of the Coulée de Serrant estate
Located in Savennières, on the right bank of the Loire River, Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is a 7-hectare vineyard managed as a monopoly by the Joly family since 1962. It is classified as Savennières – Coulée de Serrant, one of the few AOCs to be owned by a single estate. Since the early 1980s, Nicolas Joly, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in France, has applied a radically natural approach. The estate has earned a worldwide reputation for its powerful, unsettling, and often unclassifiable wines.
Presentation of the vintage and the appellation
- Name: Savennières – Serrant Flow, Loire Valley
- Area: 7 hectares monopoly
- Grape variety: 100% Chenin Blanc
- Soil type: schist, quartz, aeolian sands
- Cultivation method: strict biodynamics since 1984
- Yields: very low (often around 20 hl/ha)
- Vinification: indigenous yeasts, no chaptalization, no temperature control, aging in old barrels for 6 to 8 months.
- Wine profile: deep golden color, often evolving nose (honey, wax, overripe apple, spices), dense, tense palate, sometimes oxidative or masterful depending on the bottle.
- Critics' rating: Uneven across bottles and tastings, hence its reputation for unpredictability.
Presentation of the 1988 vintage
A vintage considered solid in the Loire Valley. Chenins reached a good level of maturity, thanks to stable climatic conditions. The dry white wines of 1988 have good aging potential, although they can have very different profiles depending on the cellar and vinification methods. In the case of the Clos, this further accentuates the "bottle-by-bottle" effect.

WUAT Rating and Tasting Tips
Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, particularly in older vintages, is known for its great variability. Some bottles can offer a transcendent experience, others can disappoint. This is the charm or the challenge of this lively, uncorrected wine, produced without a safety net. Savvy wine lovers know this and yet return to it, as if to commit to a passionate challenge.
Tasting Tips : Open at least 12 hours before tasting to fully enjoy the wine. Be careful, this is a fragile wine that does not tolerate strong temperature fluctuations.
We do not ship this bottle between June and September unless expressly requested by the buyer.
