Clos de la Coulée de Serrant 1993 - Nicolas Joly Savennières
Presentation of the Coulée de Serrant estate
Located in Savennières, on the right bank of the Loire River, Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is a 7-hectare vineyard managed as a monopoly by the Joly family since 1962. It is classified as Savennières – Coulée de Serrant, one of the few AOCs to be owned by a single estate. Since the early 1980s, Nicolas Joly, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in France, has applied a radically natural approach. The estate has earned a worldwide reputation for its powerful, unsettling, and often unclassifiable wines.
Presentation of the vintage and the appellation
- Name: Savennières – Serrant Flow (Loire Valley)
- Area: 7 hectares
- Grape variety: 100% Chenin Blanc
- Soil: schists, quartz and sands
- Cultivation method: strict biodynamics (Demeter certification), manual harvesting
- Vinification: fermentation with indigenous yeasts, without chaptalization, no temperature control, aging in old barrels for several months, without fining or filtration
- Yields: very low (often around 20 hl/ha)
- Wine profile: Intense gold color, nose of beeswax, overripe apple, dried herbs, or sometimes candied fruit. Taut, full-bodied, even oxidative palate depending on the bottle.
Critics' Notes: Rarely rated consistently. Parker, Robinson, Bettane, and others point out irregularity but recognize absolute peaks in some bottles.
Presentation of the 1993 vintage
The 1993 vintage is considered fair to good in the Loire Valley, with an uneven summer and a cool but rather dry September. The Chenin matured slowly, producing wines that were sometimes austere in their youth but interesting as they matured slowly. As is often the case with this estate, the tasting will depend greatly on each bottle.
Condition of the bottles
- Level: Perfect
- Color: Perfect
- Bottle A: Stained and partially torn
- Overall Condition: Excellent

WUAT Rating and Tasting Tips
This wine is one of those whose tasting is an uncertain, almost mystical experience . Some bottles achieve unparalleled grandeur, others can be marked by oxidative or unbalanced notes. It is an oenological roulette that lovers of the Coulée de Serrant willingly accept, in search of a moment of grace. Not recommended for overly Cartesian drinkers.
Tasting Tips : Open at least 12 hours before tasting to fully enjoy the wine. Be careful, this is a fragile wine that does not tolerate strong temperature fluctuations.
We do not ship this bottle between June and September unless expressly requested by the buyer.
Food and wine pairings
- Bresse chicken with truffles
