Presentation of Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné
The Paul Jaboulet Aîné house is one of the most prestigious names in the Rhône Valley. Founded in 1834, it became legendary through its rigorous management of the greatest terroirs, especially Hermitage. In the 1980s, under the direction of the Jaboulet family, the estate produced wines of exceptional structure and aging potential, making each bottle a global reference.
Presentation of the cuvée and the appellation
This Crozes-Hermitage comes from the largest vineyard in the northern Rhône. While the appellation is often drunk young today, the Jaboulet cuvées from this era were built as age-worthy wines. 100% Syrah, this wine expresses the nobility of granitic soils and the smoky and spicy character typical of the appellation, sublimated by traditional aging in large oak casks.
Presentation of the 1980 vintage
The 1980 vintage in the Rhône Valley was a year of patience. Less publicized than 1978, it nevertheless produced wines of great finesse with preserved acidity, which proves to be a major asset for long-term preservation. Today, the 1980s reveal a fascinating tertiary complexity, combining elegance and persistence.
Bottle condition
This bottle is in remarkable condition for its age. The fill level is 3 cm below the cork, which is excellent for a bottle over 45 years old. The color has remained very beautiful and luminous. The label is slightly aged by time spent in the cellar, which guarantees ideal storage humidity.
Tasting notes
The color is a deep garnet red with brick nuances. The nose is subtle, offering notes of leather, ground black pepper, cold tobacco, and candied small red fruits. On the palate, the tannins are completely melted, creating a velvety texture. The finish is delicate, with notes of undergrowth and black truffle.
Food and wine pairings
- Small feathered game (partridge, woodcock)
- Tender red meats in light sauce
- Aged cheeses such as Saint-Marcellin or Rigotte de Condrieu
- To be enjoyed alone to appreciate its full historical complexity
Serving suggestions
- Serving temperature: 16–17°C
- Aeration: Do not decant. A slow opening in the bottle 1 hour before serving is preferable so as not to rush the wine.
- Cellaring: To be enjoyed now, this wine is at its peak.
WUAT Note
A 46-year-old Crozes-Hermitage in this condition is a true rarity. Paul Jaboulet Aîné produced a wine of character that proves that the great terroirs of the Rhône do not fear time. A memorable birthday gift for a 1980 native.
