Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2008 - The Audacity of Pinot Noir
Introducing the vintage:
Often considered a "jet-set" Champagne, Dom Pérignon rosé nevertheless has many qualities to seduce even the most discerning Champagne lovers. This cuvée is particularly sensitive to the vintage effect due to the high proportion of Pinot Noir it contains. And an unripe Pinot Noir is not a good Pinot Noir, we promise you.
The older vintages (1960-1980) tended to appeal to the tastes of the time, which is to be expected. They were then much sweeter (between 3 and 5 times more, sometimes even more) than today's vintages.
It is said that the high sugar content combined with the natural acidity of Champagne wines allowed them to age gracefully. However, as Champagne ages, it has an unfortunate tendency to lose its bubbles. And a rosé wine that is sweet, flat, and potentially slightly oxidized, if not stored with great care, may not be to everyone's taste today, least of all us.
Fortunately, "modern" wines benefit from more favorable climates. Sugar dosages are much lower, or even absent, and the wines are better balanced and more consistent.
The 2008 Vintage: An Unprecedented Balance
The 2008 vintage is an anomaly in the otherwise sunny decade of the 2000s, characterized by a gray and cool climate. The late harvest, under a blazing sun, ultimately revealed exceptionally ripe grapes with a crisp acidity. For Dom Pérignon, this resulted in a cuvée of rare purity and aromatic precision, with unexpected concentration and depth.
The Radical Rosé Blend
The Dom Pérignon Rosé 2008 reflects the House's creative audacity. It is crafted from a daring blend of Pinot Noir (59%) and Chardonnay (41%). This predominance of Pinot Noir, particularly from the Hautvillers and Aÿ vineyards, imparts a full-bodied, vinous structure that enhances the wine's natural brilliance and precision.
Tasting Notes: Intensity and Purity
After nearly twelve years of aging in the cellar, this Rosé reveals itself to be intense and clear:
- Dress: Slightly tiled, old rose with salmon highlights.
- Nose: Complex, it opens instantly with raspberry and wild strawberry, notes of red fruits and powdery nuances of iris and violet. Spicy and woody touches appear with aeration.
- Palate: The initial sensations are tactile and silky, unfolding like a firm caress. The wine is elegant, pure, and athletic, structured by the vintage's signature acidity. The finish is marked by aromas of peony and white pepper.
Structure and Guard
This vintage is characterized by its remarkable harmony between the nose and palate. The acidity is exceptionally well integrated into the Pinot Noir structure, giving the wine a vibrant heart. This powerful, silky profile, with its surprising salinity, promises exceptional aging potential, with peak drinking estimated between 2027 and 2045.
