Presentation of Fontanafredda Estate
Founded in 1878 by the son of Italy's first king, Victor Emmanuel II, Fontanafredda is a legendary estate in Piedmont. Located in Serralunga d'Alba, this "City of Wine" is renowned for its elegant Barolo and great Barbaresco wines, aged in monumental historic cellars. The estate is a symbol of the refinement and longevity of wines made from the Nebbiolo grape.
Presentation of the Cuvée and Appellation
This wine is a Barbaresco, produced 100% from the Nebbiolo grape on the hills surrounding the villages of Barbaresco, Treiso, and Neive. More "feminine" than its neighbor Barolo, Barbaresco is known for its elegance, tension, and aromatic complexity. The historic back label of this bottle recalls the royal origins of the estate and its commitment to long aging methods in Slavonian oak casks, typical of traditional great Italian reds.
Presentation of the 1974 Vintage
The 1974 vintage in Barbaresco is considered a year of structure, powerful and austere in its youth, but which has developed remarkable complexity over time. The grapes benefited from a long growing season, giving the wine a beautiful acidity, a key factor for the aging of this 13% alcohol Nebbiolo.
Bottle Condition
The bottle is in very good general condition. The wine level is almost perfect (just below the capsule), which is excellent for a 50-year-old wine. The main label is slightly torn, a detail that confirms the authenticity of its aging. The capsule is intact.
Tasting Notes
Tiled garnet color with orange reflections. Complex nose blending roasted cherry, dried roses, fine leather, blond tobacco, undergrowth, and a hint of tar characteristic of aged Nebbiolo. On the palate, the tannins are melted, giving way to a silky texture and a persistent tangy finish with notes of bitter orange zest and dry earth.
Food Pairings
- Game in sauce (pheasant, hare à la royale)
- Long-aged porcini mushroom risotto
- Agnolotti (Piedmontese ravioli) with white truffle
- Long-aged cow's milk cheeses (Bra duro, Toma piemontese)
Serving Suggestions
- Serving temperature: 17–18°C
- Aeration: 1 to 2 hours in a decanter recommended to allow the wine to breathe
- Aging: To be enjoyed now, the wine is at its absolute peak
WUAT Rating
Tasting a Barbaresco from the 70s is a rare experience. This 1974 Fontanafredda presents a perfect fill level. It is the archetype of the weathered elegance of traditional Nebbiolo, where finesse triumphs over power.
