Presentation of E. Guigal Estate
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, the Guigal house has become the global emblem of the Rhône Valley. Under the direction of Marcel and now Philippe Guigal, the estate has distinguished itself with long and precise aging processes, capable of enhancing the most modest and the most prestigious terroirs. Their Gigondas is a model of consistency and nobility.
Presentation of the Cuvée and Appellation
The Gigondas appellation, located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, produces powerful and full-bodied wines. This Guigal cuvée is made from a traditional blend dominated by Grenache and Syrah. Unlike some wines in the region that are sometimes overly alcoholic, the Guigal signature brings an elegant structure and controlled extraction that preserves the fruit's finesse.
Presentation of the 2006 Vintage
The 2006 vintage in the Southern Rhône is a year of balance. The wines show good concentration without excessive ripeness. Twenty years later, this Gigondas proves its great aging potential: it has retained its liveliness while developing an aromatic complexity typical of old Southern wines, without ever turning to jammy or cooked aromas.
Bottle Condition
Due to storage in cardboard in a very humid cellar close to the ground, the aesthetic condition of the bottles varies. Some labels are in good condition, while others are very worn, especially the back labels. We have rigorously taken this visual aspect into account in our selling price. However, the wine is perfectly preserved, as confirmed by our recent tasting.
Tasting Notes (March 2026)
The color is still dark and brilliant. The nose offers a bouquet of spices, garrigue, and black fruits. On the palate, the wine surprises with its youthfulness and tension. The balance is perfect, with no prominent alcohol. Interesting detail: the wine was even more pleasant and open the day after opening, proving a still very solid structure.
Food and Wine Pairings
- Rack of lamb with herbs de Provence
- Wild boar stew or sauced meats
- Spicy dishes (beef tagine with prunes)
- Strong cheeses (aged Saint-Nectaire, Tome)
Serving Suggestions
- Serving temperature: 17°C
- Aeration: Prolonged aeration in a decanter or opening the day before is highly recommended to allow the wine to relax.
- Cellaring: Can still age elegantly for 3 to 5 years.
WUAT's Note
This 2006 Gigondas is a superb surprise. It offers the pleasure of a mature wine with the energy of a young wine. It's the ideal time to discover it, especially for those looking for a great Rhône wine at an attractive price due to its superficial label imperfections.
