Château de Montmirail: The jewel of the Dentelles de Montmirail
Founded by the Archimbaud family and now managed by subsequent generations, Château de Montmirail is a historic and unmissable name in the Vacqueyras and Gigondas appellations. Nestled against the majestic Dentelles de Montmirail, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate and clay-limestone soils that give the wines a natural power combined with great consistency. The "Cuvée de Beauchamp" is a selection that perfectly expresses the typicity and strong character of this distinctive terroir.
The 1988 Vintage: The forgotten straightness of the Southern Rhône
Often overshadowed in memory by the very sunny 1989 vintage, 1988 is nevertheless a fantastic year for lovers of aged wines in the Southern Rhône. The wines are characterized by solid tannic structures, good acidity, and a classic balance. It is precisely these technical elements that have allowed this bottle to remain strong for nearly forty years in the cellar.
Tasting Profile: A masterful surprise
Found during a cellar inventory of a case, this bottle literally blew us away during tasting. Contrary to what one might fear from a Southern wine of this age, the wine is absolutely not cooked: it shows no heavy maderized notes or withered fruits. Moreover, its texture has remained dense and structured, avoiding the trap of fluidity or emaciation of overly old wines. It is a ripe, mellow juice, offering tertiary notes of leather, black olive tapenade, dried garrigue, and undergrowth, all supported by a still very lively finish.
Bottle Condition and Conservation
The bottle is in very good condition, indicative of serene rest. The liquid level is excellent for a 1988 vintage, well up to the neck (bottom of capsule), guaranteeing perfect cork sealing. The traditional white label shows a natural patina and slight humidity spots that confirm its authenticity, without affecting its perfect legibility.
Serving Suggestions
- Temperature: Serve around 16-17°C.
- Aeration: Do not decant dynamically. Open the bottle gently about 1 hour before serving to allow the garrigue aromas to slowly release.
- Pairings: A traditional Provençal daube, a leg of lamb rubbed with garlic and rosemary, or a characterful cheese.
WUAT Rating
This 1988 Cuvée de Beauchamp is a true "time capsule" for Rhône enthusiasts. It beautifully proves that Gigondas, when well-born and well-aged, possesses immense aging potential. An emotional, ripe, and structured wine, perfect for a shared moment or to celebrate a 1988 anniversary.
