Like many Châteaux, this second wine of Cos d'Estournel comes from the estate's young vines.
These Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines, aged between 5 and 20 years, were used until 1994 for the production of Château Marbuzet.
While it may be less "sharp" and less "full" than its big brother (and it's also much cheaper), Les Pagodes remains a true St-Estèphe that benefits from the house's expertise. The wine is powerful and concentrated but remains fresh and supported by a nice acidity.
Although the 1997 vintage is not the one that will be remembered most (far from it), these Pagodes are a nice surprise! The wine is made in an "old-fashioned" style. In other words, powerful tannins, little fruit, little sugar and a lot of aging. The result is a wine that is certainly a little rustic but ultimately interesting and ready to drink.
We recommend a short decanting time of half an hour before serving.
