Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 1959 - Maison Thomas Bassot

A Relic of the Vintage of the Century: 1959 remains etched in Burgundy's memory as a year of grace, when the sun bestowed exceptional ripeness upon the Pinot Noir. This Mazis-Chambertin, a jewel of the Côte de Nuits, is one of its noblest ambassadors.

The Rigour of Swiss Trade: Baur au Lac Selection

This bottle is a precious relic of a bygone era. In the late 1950s, the finest wines were still imported in casks by prestigious Swiss wineries. This particular bottle was aged and bottled by Baur au Lac (Zurich), a legendary importer renowned for its impeccable selection and preservation. The original capsule, beautifully stamped, attests to its distinguished provenance.

The "Old School" Style: Power and Longevity

Lovers of great old wines know that the regulations of the 1950s allowed for a certain "interpretation" of blending. It wasn't uncommon to add a portion of sun-drenched southern wine to strengthen the structure of the Pinot Noir. The result is a richer, more tannic wine with phenomenal aging potential. This Mazis-Chambertin is not just a wine; it's a solid structure that has defied time.

A State of Museum Conservation

For a bottle over 60 years old, its condition is simply spectacular:

  • Level: 2 cm, which is exceptional for a 1959 vintage (testifies to a cellar with perfect humidity).
  • Headdress: Original, perfectly preserved and legible.
  • Color: A chromatic depth typical of great, well-preserved 1959s.

WUAT's Opinion

One doesn't open a bottle like this by chance. It's a wine for contemplation, requiring time and attention. If it still possesses the energy of the "enriched" wines of that era, it will have developed notes of undergrowth, fine leather, truffle, and cherry brandy. A unique sensory experience for any collector of historic Burgundy.
