Presentation of the Fonseca house
Fonseca was founded in 1815 in Vila Nova de Gaia, at the heart of the Port trade. Known for its powerful Vintages and elegant LBVs, it is part of The Fladgate Partnership group. Fonseca is particularly renowned for its sustainable approach to Douro vineyards and for its generous, fruity, and consistently structured style.
Presentation of the 1992 vintage
The 1992 vintage in the Douro Valley benefited from favorable climatic conditions: a hot, dry summer, early harvests, and perfectly ripe grapes. It was an excellent vintage, although not declared "Vintage" by all the wineries, which allowed for the production of very fine LBVs.
Introducing the Late Bottled Vintage (LBV)
An LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port is made from a single vintage, like a Vintage, but is aged longer in foudres before bottling, usually between 4 and 6 years. It is more supple, ready to drink sooner, and does not require decanting. Fonseca's 1992 LBV, bottled in 1998, offers aromas of ripe black fruits, figs, licorice, and cocoa. The palate is velvety, with a full, spicy finish. It can be aged for several more years in good conditions.
