Presentation of the Fonseca Guimaraens house
Founded in 1815 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Fonseca is one of the most iconic names in vintage port. It now belongs to The Fladgate Partnership group (Taylor's, Croft, Fonseca). The "Guimaraens" range, produced in years considered less prestigious, nevertheless displays remarkable, often underestimated quality. It bears the name of one of the house's historic founders.
Presentation of the wine & the appellation
The Guimaraens cuvée is a Vintage Port made from the traditional Douro grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. Vinified in lagares, then aged in foudres before bottling, this wine is intended for long-term aging. The 1986, bottled in 1988, now mature, offers a beautiful complexity: prune, cocoa, blond tobacco, with a velvety and long palate. According to specialist tasters, this vintage delivers very pleasant surprises (often rated around 90 points by specialist critics).
Presentation of the 1986 vintage
The 1986 vintage is considered good to very good in the Douro Valley. After a wet spring, the summer was hot, dry, and conducive to excellent grape ripeness. Production was slightly below average, but quality was very satisfactory on the best terroirs.
