Tignanello: The Rebel Who Became a Legend
Created by the Antinori family, Tignanello shattered all the rules of Italian viticulture in the 70s. By introducing Cabernet Sauvignon into a Sangiovese-dominated blend and using small French oak barriques, Antinori gave birth to the "Super Tuscan" movement. The 1980 vintage is a perfect example of this quest for excellence which aimed to place Tuscan wines on the same level as the greatest crus worldwide.
A Vintage of Precision and Balance
The back label of this bottle is a true oenological manifesto. It details, with a precision rare for the time, the wine's analytical data: a controlled fermentation at 27°C, preserved acidity, and a long 18-month aging in barriques. This technical rigor allowed the 1980 vintage to traverse the decades with astonishing structure and freshness.
Provenance and Condition
From a prestigious private cellar near Zurich, this lot of 3 bottles is in remarkable condition. The level is excellent, located at the bottom of the neck, which is exceptional for a wine over 40 years old. The labels are clean and the technical back labels are perfectly legible. Some normal signs of use for storage in a humid cellar (ideal for the cork) are to be noted on the capsules.
Tasting Notes
Tignanello 1980 today offers a bouquet of absolute complexity. One finds the noble tertiary notes of aged Sangiovese: tobacco, precious leather, kirsch black cherry, and a hint of sweet spices brought by the Cabernet. On the palate, the tannins are of a silky finesse. The acidity, meticulously measured at harvest (7.80‰), ensures a long, elegant, and still vibrant finish.
Food Pairings
- A beef fillet with morels
- A Tuscan-style wild boar ragout (Pappardelle sulla lepre)
- A Pecorino Toscano aged several months
- To be savored religiously to appreciate the evolution of a historic wine
Serving Suggestions
- Temperature: 18°C
- Aeration: Do not decant. An "à l'épaule" opening (uncorking 2 hours before) is ideal to allow the wine to express itself without aggression.
- Cellaring: This wine is at its peak. It will be perfectly enjoyable now and for the next 5 years.
WUAT Note
To own a Tignanello 1980 is to own a manifesto. It is the wine that proved to the world that Italy could produce age-worthy wines of surgical precision. In this Swiss condition, it is a collector's item that will delight both lovers of great reds and enthusiasts of viticultural history.
