Presentation of the House of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin
Founded in 1772 , Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin is one of the most famous Champagne houses. Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin helped the house rise to prominence. While it is world-renowned for its sparkling Champagne, it has always maintained a very limited production of still wines. The house is based in Reims and its vineyard is mainly planted with Grands and Premiers Crus.
Characteristics of the Cuvée Coteaux Champenois Blanc de Blancs
Coteaux Champenois is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) for still (non-sparkling) wines produced in the Champagne region:
- Appellation: Coteaux Champenois (AOC), heart of the Champagne vineyard.
- Typology: This "Blanc de Blancs" is made exclusively from Chardonnay . It offers the pure expression of the chalk terroir, giving the wine great minerality and finesse. The grapes for this cuvée come from the vines of the Clicquot house and not from the merchant.
- Vinification: These still wines are rare because the majority of the grapes are reserved for the production of Champagne. The bottle is a testament to an ancient tradition and a wine that has been optimally preserved.
- Notes: Over time, this still white wine from the 1960s has likely developed complex aromas of dried fruit, quince, honey, and undergrowth. The palate is rich, reflecting very long aging potential.
Analysis of the Production Period (1960s)
This bottle is estimated to date from the 1960s. Coteaux Champenois wines from this period are extremely rare, as they were often not intended for mass marketing. Bottles that have survived the decades like this one, maintaining a perfect level, are of considerable historical and oenological value.
